Roy Underhill 是美国传统木作复兴的关键人物之一——他主持 PBS 电视系列《The Woodwright’s Shop》，几十年只用手工工具、不用电，把十八九世纪美国与英国的木匠技艺一件件搬回镜头前。本书就是这套节目的配套读物，1983 年由北卡罗来纳大学出版社出版，与他的《The Woodwright’s Shop》一脉相承：不讲”现代速成”，只讲传统匠人的取材、工具与做法。

全书按材料与工艺的自然顺序推进：先讲去哪里找木料（旧料、拆迁料、林地里的可用之材），再讲森林与树种——白蜡、山核桃、栎、黑刺槐、柏、椴等北美东部木材的特性与用途，穿插冰川与林地变迁的历史。接下来是工具本身的制作：斧柄与其他工具柄（helves and handles）的选材、劈制与装柄；锯的齿形与伐齿；天然磨石的采集、整形与磨砺功夫。

中段转向乡土小木作与实战：乌鸦驱赶器与火鸡哨等乡村小器物；编织式的篱栅（hurdle，即美国人口中的”弗吉尼亚栅栏”）；风动小玩具（whimmy diddle）一类的民间玩意儿；以及作者亲手示范的两件基础工具——墨斗弹线（snap line）与划线规（marking gauge）。再往后是带滑动燕尾榫的烛台、手工木身刨的制作与使用、窗框匠（sash joiner）的升降窗技艺。

最后两章把尺度拉到建筑：劈制木瓦与屋面的铺法（Riven Roof），坑锯匠（pitman）用坑锯把原木锯成板材的整套流程与进度，以及木构架匠（housewright）架设房屋的接合与做法。书中每一处都配作者的现场照片与手绘图，很多工序是他在弗吉尼亚殖民地威廉斯堡（Colonial Williamsburg）与历史工坊里实做出来的。
