本书是 1906 年由 Silver, Burdett and Company 出版的儿童木工教学指导书，作者 Gustaf Larsson 是波士顿 Sloyd 师范学校（Sloyd Training School, Boston）校长，也是把瑞典 Sloyd 手工教育体系引入美国的核心人物。所谓 Sloyd，书中开篇即给出定义：一种经过精心安排与使用的工具作业，目的是激发并促进工作者自觉、主动、有明确目标的活动力；而”初级手工”（Elementary Sloyd）特指适合八至十二岁儿童的木工台面作业，作品基本为两度空间的简单型体。

作者在前言中说明，他 1889 年曾为”预备手工”（Preliminary Sloyd）出版过一套工作图，并配教师用的《Sloyd Manual of Working Directions》；本书是在此基础上，吸收众多教师多年实践经验后的修订课程。当时有人质疑十二岁以下儿童力气与心智尚不足以使用普通木工工具，但考虑到这个年龄的孩子本就需要充分的肌肉活动，本书因而选择了比同龄儿童常用件更大的物件，让孩子们得到更多体力锻炼——规矩要好，但精度要求相应放宽。所选作品也紧扣这一年龄段儿童的兴趣，包含玩具与游戏，其中许多来自对大量儿童原创木工作品的观察。

全书结构清晰：先讲木材（树种特性、构造、干燥与选材），再介绍初级手工所用工具与器具并配插图，随后是工具与材料清单；主体是分步作业指导（working directions），每个作品都配工作图与操作顺序，之后附上色与抛光；后半部分转入削木（whittling）：一般指导、削木作业指导、工具与材料配置，最后收录十二岁以下儿童的自发创作图解，用以说明”应当让孩子自由选择想做什么”还是”应当遵循由易到难的有序课程”这一教育争论。
