本书原名 The Illustrated Handbook of Woodworking Joints（木工接合图解手册），是英国木工作家 Percy W. Blandford 为美国 TAB Books 写的一本专题工具书，1984 年初版（版权页标注 FIRST EDITION / FOURTH PRINTING，ISBN 0-8306-0274-7）。全书 352 页，聚焦一件事：木材与木材之间究竟有多少种连接方式。作者在引言里说得很直白——做木工不可能不接合，最简单的构件也许只是把两块木头叠起来胶合、钉合或螺栓连接，但家具、船和房屋都需要真正的接合；从耶稣诞生之前就有人在用讲究的接合，更粗糙的连接方式只会更早。令人意外的是，今天在用的接合方式中仍有相当大一部分与古代匠人的做法相同，只是随现代材料和工具作了调整。

作者的核心判断是「几乎没有过时的接合方式」。人造板（刨花板、硬质板）要求与实木不同的接合，机床的出现带来了新的开榫与成型方法，但家具与许多其他物件的基本材料仍是实木，而木材的最终加工仍有大量工序靠手工完成——所以老做法继续有效。全书因此以「接合」为唯一的组织线索，把手工接合按力学原理分类：提供机械锁定的接合（销钉、楔、燕尾）、为胶合提供更大侧纹接触面的接合、以及允许构件随含水率变化而移动的接合。

内容组织上，第一章先讲原理（机械强度、收缩配合、胶合、活动接合），第二章讲钉接与螺钉接（含金属连接件、吊架螺栓、对角撑、扶手螺栓、拼环连接件、木螺钉、鸟嘴接、拼合梁、细条钉合法），第三章讲拼板（涂胶前的准备、夹持、圆棒榫拼板、暗槽螺钉、砧板构造、搭叠板）。此后按接合类型逐章展开：半搭接（第四章，22 种变体）、横纹槽与嵌槽接（第五章，23 种）、榫卯（第六章，44 种变体，全书最厚的一章）、圆棒榫接（第七章）、夹榫（第八章）、燕尾榫（第九章）、企口与嵌条（第十章）、斜接与桶板接（第十一章）、嵌接与长料拼接（第十二章）、关闭接合（第十三章，柜门挡条、防尘、双开门、企口缝、可提起面板、抽屉接合）、铰链接合（第十四章）、曲线与层压接合（第十五章）、机床加工接合（第十六章）、以及人造板接合（第十七章）。书末附术语表与索引。
