本书是美国 NCCER（National Center for Construction Education and Research，国家建筑教育与研究中心）编写的《Carpentry Level One》第五版学员指南，由 Pearson 出版。NCCER 是成立于 1996 年的非营利教育基金会，其标准化木工课程被全美数以百计的培训机构采用，并可与学徒制办公室（Office of Apprenticeship）的课堂培训要求对接。本书版权页标注的年份为 2013（此前版本为 2005、2001、1995）。

全书对应木工一级（Level One）核心课程”Introductory Craft Skills”，共 9 个模块：先回顾行业历史与学徒制、介绍建筑材料与紧固件、讲解手工与电动工具，再进入图纸识读与放样、地板系统、墙体系统、天花搁栅与屋顶框架、建筑外围护系统及基础楼梯放样。每个模块开篇列出目标（Objectives）、效绩任务（Performance Tasks）、行业术语（Trade Terms）和所需学员材料，正文穿插逐步操作说明（Step-by-Step Instructions）、Did You Know?、Going Green 等栏框，章末配复习题。

本版采用新的教学设计，强调”Going Green”可持续建筑理念，并在建筑材料章节增补结构混凝土与结构钢内容；第一章”Orientation to the Trade”还向学员介绍 SkillsUSA 等学生组织。书中充满全彩插图与照片，重实践、轻说教，适合课堂教学与现场参考兼顾，是北美地区木工学徒培训使用最广的一级教材之一。
