作者 Mark Milner 在楼梯行业干了二十五年，四十岁那年从工厂转到教育岗位，随后发现一个空缺：市面上写给木工学徒的好书不少，但楼梯这个题目往往只占其中一章，远远不够。于是他把二十五年里在英国和北美两地做楼梯、装楼梯、修楼梯和教楼梯的经验，写成这本专门讲楼梯的手册。他在前言中说，写作目标是「不只在一门职业课程期间有用，而是整个职业生涯都能查阅」。
本书的写法是彻底的方法论：每一步都算清楚、画清楚、核对两遍，尽量避免出错，因为楼梯是细木工里最贵、最不容失败的活。作者反复强调楼梯是三维的——门窗只有高和宽，楼梯还有斜度和转折；如果你懂楼梯，就会得到同行的尊重，而且「楼梯等于就业能力」：会测量、会放样、会做楼梯的人，在工地上不可替代。文章语气轻松，插图全部是实拍的真实楼梯与真实工地，不是示意图。
全书按楼梯类型递进展开：第 1 至 3 章打基础，讲楼梯的语言（踏步、踢板、踏步鼻、斜梁、望柱五大构件）、级高与级宽等放样术语、英国建筑法规与现场测量方法，以及自制铣削靠模等专用工装；第 4 章用直跑楼梯把完整流程走一遍——计算、下料单与木料准备、在斜梁上放样、铣槽、制备望柱与踏步、错孔挤紧（draw-bore）的准备、组装到运输保护；第 5 至 9 章依次是带四分之一平台的 L 形楼梯、带斜踏步的 L 形楼梯、带半转平台的狗腿楼梯、弧形楼梯和交替踏步楼梯，难度逐级上升，其中弧形楼梯一章完整讲透了圆几何、斜梁展开、柔性胶合板、弯曲胎模、层压弧形斜梁、贴木皮与蜗卷扶手。
第 10 章把圆端踏步、圆形起步踏步、斜接斜梁的切法、开敞斜梁转封闭斜梁、望柱帽等特殊做法单独整理；第 11 章专讲栏杆与扶手，包括建筑法规、栏杆类型与设计、栏杆中心线、望柱与扶手的榫卯连接（作者明确说明扶手与望柱用榫卯远比钉螺安全）、柱到柱式与越柱式栏杆的做法、弧形扶手与蜗卷的制作，以及最终安装；第 12 章则是维修篇：楼梯异响的成因、更换木楔、斜梁与墙脱离、踢板螺钉固定、更换角胶块、更换断裂栏杆柱、固定松动望柱、加装阳台栏杆和加长扶手。
书中一项特色工具是「级高与级宽计算图」（Rise and Going calculator）：一张彩色易读的图表，用查表代替几何和三角函数运算，让学徒不必推导就能得到安全的级高与级宽组合。书末附术语表与索引，术语表对英国与北美两套说法都作了对照（例如 going 在北美叫 run、strings 在北美叫 stringers）。
