本书是 1908 年由美国 Macmillan 公司出版的木工教科书，作者 Joseph C. Park 时任纽约州 Oswego 州立师范与训练学校（State Normal and Training School）教师。书前以 John Ruskin 的一段话作题记：”这些年来我们总想把智力与体力劳动分开……劳动者应当常常思考，思考者也应当常常劳动”，点明全书对手工训练（manual training）的立场：它不是教一门手艺，而是”借助工具，把想法落实到纸、木、铁、黄铜等材料上”的一般教育环节。

全书正是为学校课堂写的，也是写给家里的。作者在前言中说明，本书虽分成若干部分，但并不要求学完一部分再学下一部分，而是从一开始就把各部分的工作平行布置，像对待算术、地理作业一样要求学生负责；”Topics for Study””Technical Operations””Tools”三类内容都要作口头与书面的复述，学生还应通过”Key”熟识常见木材的名称与特性。前言后附有作业进度表（Schedule of Work）与工具清单，供各地学校按本地条件作少量调整后照行。

全书主体分七个部分。第一、二部分是工具与机械：第一部分把 78 项手工工具逐项讲解，从工作台、英制与米制、直尺与直角尺、框架角尺及其椽表和板尺量法，到划线规、Sloyd 刀、各类凿与圆凿、刨与辐刨、锯及其锉齿磨法、锉与钻具、旋钻与螺钉工具、夹具台钳锤凿，再到磨刀器具与工坊辅具；第二部分讲 22 项木工机械与传动，从功、能与功率的概念，带锯、线锯、摆锯、组合锯台、圆锯及其转速计算，到单面刨、平刨、木工车床与皮带及其各种接头。

第三至五部分转向材料、连接与表面：第三部分以纲要形式讲树木分类、木材组成、树木腐朽、制材与木材性质（附大量数据表与强度规律）；第四部分讲木结构中的钉、螺钉、胶、胶加热器与木紧固件（圆棒榫、销、压条、键、楔）；第五部分讲木器涂装的目标、油性淡色与深色着色、着色剂、清漆、虫胶漆、填孔剂与成套涂装规格。

第六、七部分是实作：第六部分”练习”分 A 无工坊学校的刀工作业与 B 台面作业（涉及接合与细木工制作），收录火柴盒、衣架、毛巾辊、吸墨纸垫、钥匙架、圆凳、书架、香豌豆架、脚凳、盘架、伞架、风标、组合书桌书架等大量小件与家具的图纸和制作说明，末尾专门练习贯通燕尾榫、半燕尾榫与贯通榫卯；第七部分讲木工车旋的历史、工具、使用保养与 28 项编号车旋练习。卷末三个附录分别是北美重要木材鉴别表（含木材名录）、结构问题与几何辅助、常用数据表。
