全书按”由房屋外部到内部、由大工程到小物件”的顺序编排：前半部处理房屋本体（装修、砌砖、镶玻璃、混凝土、屋面、地面、门窗、楼梯、排水、栅栏、铺装、供水），中段转入室内设施与家具（厨房设施、搁板、家具修理与重新抛光、墙壁固定件），末段集中讲述工坊本身——工具配置与刃磨、工作台与工坊布置、锡焊，最后是木材害虫的识别与防治、各种涂料与清洁配方，以及动物胶、鱼胶、树脂胶、酪素胶、橡胶类胶粘剂等。

编者在前言中强调，本书选取的是普通住户最常面对的工作，逐项给出最佳做法，指出易犯的错误，说明经验证明可靠的方法，并推荐最合适的材料。每一项作业都配以专门绘制的工序插图，读者可对照执行。
