本书是美国《Woodworker’s Journal》（木工之友）杂志编辑部集体编写、HarperCollins 于 2007 年出版的大型木工百科，与史密森学会（Smithsonian）合作推出，全书共 16 章，是一部面向从零起步到进阶爱好者的通读型工具书。它把杂志三十年来积累的文章与插图重新整合、更新成体系化的教程，插图与彩色照片数百幅，由 Hydra Publishing 协助编辑成书。

内容从木工与家具风格的历史讲起，经巴洛克、联邦时期、Shaker、包豪斯、工艺美术运动、传教团风格、草原学派一直到当代大师，帮助读者建立对家具形式的判断力；接着讲解硬木的分级、规格、含水率与干燥、人造板材和常见树种，把”材料”这一课落到实处。工具部分从测量划线工具、台刨、刮刀、凿、辐刨、夹具等手工工具，一路讲到便携电动工具与固定式机械（台锯、带锯、平刨、压刨、镂铣机、车床、台钻等），并专门用一章比较锯片与铣刀、钻头的选择，还在手工具、台锯操作、除尘等章节反复强调安全。

技法部分覆盖开料校方、拼板、开槽、锥度切割、二次纵剖、曲线加工与镂铣基础，以及燕尾榫、箱接、榫卯、框板结构、圆棒榫、饼干榫、斜孔螺丝等主流接合方式；随后是木皮贴面、雕刻与线锯、木车旋三个专题工艺，以及夹具与工装一章，收录横截滑台、斜切夹具、榫头夹具、开槽夹具、鼓式砂磨台等实用自制辅具。最后一章转向工坊本身：照明、材料与工具收纳、机械保养；书末另附六个完整制作项目、术语表、资源名录与索引。
