本书是 R.J. De Cristoforo 为初学者撰写的一部木工系统教程，1993 年由 TAB Books（McGraw-Hill 旗下，美国宾夕法尼亚州 Blue Ridge Summit）出版。作者被《Mechanix Illustrated》杂志誉为”家庭工坊作家翘楚”（The Dean of Home Workshop Writers），另著有《The Portable Router Book》《The Table Saw Book》《The Jigsaw/Scroll Saw Book》等多部木工专著。

全书共 17 章，从划线、安全、材料讲起，逐一剖析手锯、机械锯切、手刨、木凿、锉刀、钻头、锤钉、螺钉、五金件等工具的使用与保养，再进入木接合、胶粘剂、台钳与夹具、磨料等核心工艺，最后以工坊项目与家用项目收束。书名页之后的作者其他著作页与版权页完整保留了本书的编辑制作信息。

作者在前言中强调：传统上木工入门从熟悉手工工具开始，这一路径至今依然合理——即便电动工具可以快速完成所有操作，也没有什么比亲手用手锯横截一块木板、或用凿与刨削出一片透光刨花更让人贴近木材。作者同时提醒安全是享受木工的前提：量两次、锯一次（measure twice, cut once），下锯之前多想一次。

本书行文平实，配图以线图与操作照片为主，每章末尾的知识点均可直接落到工坊操作中，是一部典型的”从零开始的木工教科书”。
