本书是英国 Hamlyn（Octopus Publishing Group）2007 年出版的木工综合教程，作者 Phil Davy。全书以”从选购和使用工具，到买料、备料、置办家庭工坊、完成一件家具”为主线，把木工从零到能独立动手的全过程拆成清晰的步骤，配以大量线图与实拍照片说明操作。作者在前言里强调，木材既是美观的、可触摸的材料，也是用途最广的自然资源之一，木工有责任确保所用木料能被合理补植，尤其是一些已濒危的常见树种。
书的结构分为十一大部分：先讲木材与材料（环境与可持续、选材、干燥与制材、采购与存放、木皮、人造板材、世界木材图谱）、木工设计（设计入门、绘制与草图、木料清单与下料表、计算机辅助设计、家具图廊），再讲工坊（选址、必备条件、布局、存放、工作台、工坊环境、健康与安全）与工具基础（买工具、基本工具配置、工具整备、磨刀流程）。
工具与机械部分占全书近一半篇幅：手工工具（量具与划线工具、锯、刨、凿、钻、螺丝刀、锤、夹具、辐刨与刮刀、木锉与锉刀）、电动工具（无绳工具、电动锯、电钻、电动砂磨机、电刨、饼干榫机、修边机、多功能工作台）与木工机械（台锯、摇臂锯、斜切锯、带锯、线锯、平刨与压刨、台钻、打榫眼机、砂磨机、联合机床、单机与联合机床的取舍、机械安全）逐类讲清选购、调试与安全操作。
后段转向专业技法与接合工艺：车旋、贴木皮、木材弯曲、层压胶合、木雕；以及对接、搭接、拼板、圆棒榫、饼干榫、T 形半搭接、横纹槽、榫卯、夹榫、燕尾榫等接合方式的画线与加工。最后是涂装与装配准备（磨料与砂磨、填孔剂与着色剂、抛光蜡与油饰、硝基漆、胶粘剂与五金、螺钉与钉、铰链、家具五金），并附术语表、索引与致谢。书中的 Tips 与 Jargon Busters 小栏目贯穿始终，尺寸以公制给出并附尽量接近的英制换算。
