作者在前言里写道：打开这本书本身就说明读者已具备第一个条件——对木材及其用途的基本兴趣。他指出木头与金属、合金、合成树脂和塑料不同，是”活过”的有机材料，”没有两块木头是一样的”，理解并善用这种差异，比掌握任何工具和技法都重要；”所有工具和技法，若没有对材料的这份喜爱，都将毫无用处。”
