本书是 Ortho Books 家居改造系列中的一本实操指南（初版 1983 年，本版 1991 年，由 Chevron Chemical Company 出版，编辑部集体编写），主题是”精细木工”（finish carpentry）——也就是粗框架完成、水电暖管线入墙、门窗与外墙板安装到位之后的那道收尾工序。书中一开篇就点明：精细木工是整个工程最后那 10% 的工作，却往往要花掉与其前所有工序加起来一样长的时间，原因就在于它要求严丝合缝的接头、干净的斜接、优质的材料和平整的表面。

全书按”先规划、再练手、后分区施工”的逻辑编排。第一部分讲开工前的准备：计划与排程、图示索引、必须在开工前到位的各套系统（暖通、给排水、电气、防潮、地板、内门），以及按”材料用量估算表”（takeoffs）计算线脚、搁板、壁橱杆、踏步与栏杆等材料用量的方法——精细木工材料单价高，算准用量既省钱也利于安排工序。第二部分是基本功：测量与划线、切割、成形、表面处理与紧固，是后面所有安装作业的共同基础。

第三、四部分分室外与室内两大作业面展开。室外部分从总体顺序讲到外窗套线、外门套线、其他外部线脚以及室外楼梯与栏杆，反复强调”线脚先装还是后装要看外墙材料”这类现场判断。室内部分是全书篇幅最大的部分：先给出一份完整的工序清单（顶棚—墙面—壁橱—橱柜—搁板—楼梯栏杆—门窗套线），再逐项详述石膏板顶棚与墙面、护墙板、壁橱（含衣柜与储物柜内部）、橱柜（含柜体、柜门与台面）、搁板、室内楼梯与栏杆、内窗套线与内门套线以及其他室内线脚的做法。书末附索引与公制换算表，方便读者把书中的英制尺寸换算使用。
