The Handbook of Canadian Log Building · F. Dan Milne · Firefly Books 1984

Conventional versus log floor joists, then the step-by-step procedures for the tenon joist and the double-scribe notch, including chalkline and chainsaw technique.

Framing the Main Floor
Because of the considerable weight factor, framing the main floor of a log structure requires some care; several options are shown.

Starting the First Round of Logs
Starting the walls: half-logs on two parallel walls, whole logs on the adjacent walls, butts all pointing the same way, with a half-log height difference between adjacent walls.

Scribing
The longest chapter: transferring the irregular top surface of the lower log to the underside of the upper one, in the Rough-Notch stage and the Finished-Notch stage.

SETTLING AND ROOF SYSTEMS

Settling
Settling, the single most important factor to keep in mind at all times, with the formulas for calculating the settling allowance, plus making the most of long material.

Roof Systems
Common roof systems, gable-end treatment with logs or framing, ridge-pole and sandwich-tenon detail, and laying out roof angles by geometry on site.

OPENINGS AND INTERIOR WORK

Window and Door Installation
Cutting openings, stabilising the wall, splines and sliding joints—with shim space, sill allowance and settling space above the head.

Partitions
Attaching framed walls to log walls with sliding nailers and a trim board that slides down past the partition framing as the walls settle.

Cabinet Installation
Cabinet installation under settling: upper cabinets on sliding nailers, or gables wider than the cabinet with a cut in the log wall.
