《木工练习与木材简论（补充版）》是纽约市立学院（College of the City of New York）的 Ivin Sickels 为手工训练课程编写的木工教科书，初版由 D. Appleton and Company 于 1890 年发行（1889 年版权）；本扫描件为 American Book Company（辛辛那提/芝加哥）印制的版本。全书以练习为纲、辅以木材简论，并配大量图版，是十九世纪后期美国手工训练运动中最通行的木工教材之一。

Sickels 在 1883 年暑假为学生准备了这批练习，此后不断修改增补，逐步扩充为一部完整教程。书中”蛀木虫”一节由 Bashford Dean 专为本书撰写，介绍侵害木材的昆虫及其防治。

全书分两大部分。第一部分为木材简论，依次讲述木材的结构、成分、分枝、树龄、腐朽、采伐季节、制材、干燥、翘曲、性质、缺陷、计量与价值、种类、主要材性表、木材与铁、木工行业、寄生植物、蛀木虫与木材防腐，为动手制作打下材料学基础。

第二部分为 39 个循序渐进的木工练习。从工具图版、制图，以及凿、圆凿、锤、粗平刨、划线规、顺纹锯、横纹锯的基本功开始，继以油石、砂轮机与锯料锉等磨刃环节，进而制作半搭接、榫卯、短榫眼、燕尾接合、斜接、拉杆接合、圆棒连接与胶合接合，最终完成燕尾箱、抽屉、暗燕尾箱、框架、门窗、地板、楼梯、扶手、模样、船模与贴皮等完整工件，并以打磨抛光与涂漆收尾。

本书面向手工训练课学生与自学者，强调工具的正确使用与接合作法的分步训练，既可作课堂教材，也可供读者按部就班地自学十九世纪末美式木工的基本技艺。
